Ladies, do you want to go to that event without drinking way more than you want to? Wake up hangover and regret free, with more money in your pocket.  What's not to love?

Are you heading to a summer event where alcohol will be flowing freely, but you’re feeling curious about your relationship with drinking? Maybe you’re looking to cut back or even explore life without alcohol. If so, you're not alone, and I’m here to help you navigate this journey with some practical tips and compassionate support.  What have you done before when you drank less? How were you feeling?  Before you go, try to create conditions where your anxiety is at it's lowest, and you have had a decent amount of rest.  However, there are some things that really helped me.

I remeber the last time I went to an event and had a drink.  It was my friends 50th Birthday in October 2019 and I was just finishing reading This Naked Mind.  I didnt want to drink any more.  Alcohol was taking more than it was giving, yet I still had a drink getting ready.  I was all glammed up in my heels, dress and make up, and all the time at the afternoon tea I kept wondering how everyone else managed to drink soooo slowly.  I hadn't really helped myself starting before.  I had opened the door.  And when I left to go and get a taxi I decided to stop in and buy a bottle of wine.  Enroute I got my patent stilleto stuck in a pavement grate in Buchannan Street (a busy pedestrian area) and lifted the whole thing out stuck on my heel.  Completely embarassing! I didnt even put it back properly.  I was mortified! I clear had had enough to drink yet I STILL felt like I needed a drink.  I bought the wine and a chill went down my insides, knowing it HAD to end but no matter what, I was drinking that bottle that night.

There's a lot more to the journey, and I'll share in more blogs and my newsletter, but my point is, I get it.  People think it wasn't that bad .  I never had a rock bottom, I was always in work and never did anything "terrible". That was as messy in public as it got for me.  Other people got way messier than me.  But the truth is, it was bad enough for me.  I didn't want to let it continue.  I WAS NOT going to let alcohol rule my life...and I haven't. The fact is that the sooner you take back control, the easier you'll find it and the quicker you will get your freedom and peace of mind back!

I can tell you more about how I did it, but right now here are some tips to get you going!

Start Strong: Skip the Pre-Event Drink

One effective strategy is to skip the pre-event drink. It might seem like a small step, but that initial drink often lowers inhibitions and sets the stage for more drinking once you arrive. By cutting it out, you’re giving yourself a better chance to stay in control throughout the event.

Begin with a Soft Drink

Consider starting the event with a soft drink. This simple choice can set a positive tone for the evening. Think about how you want to feel at the end of the event. Do you want to feel sluggish and foggy, or energized and clear-headed? Starting with a non-alcoholic drink can help you pace yourself and may reduce the urge to switch to alcohol.

Mind Your Pace

Pay attention to the pace at which you’re drinking. It’s easy to get caught up in the social aspect of events and lose track of how much you’re consuming. By staying mindful, you can make more intentional choices about your drinking.  Being more mindful in your everyday life helps you be in that frame of mind when it comes to time for a drink.

The After Party
Yes, that sounds like something you should like, but I can tell you, I never regret not continuing to drink after a night out once I'm home or when I go somewhere else.  Getting home and lying down without the room spinning, bowing before the great white throne to throw up, waking up dehydrated and with a hangover are not something I have ever missed.

Whether it's making sure you have something planned for the next morning as an excuse/reason or avoiding having alcohol in or ensuring you don't get it in with a firm decision and a friend (or coaches) support for accountability, you can reduce the amount you drink or completely cut it out for an event. See how you feel the next day.  Really notice how good it feels to have had less alcohol in your system than normal.

The day I wake up regretting not drinking is the day I can choose to have a drink. Really consider playing the tape forwards.

Every Step Matters

Remember, every small choice you make adds up. Cutting back, starting with a non-alcoholic drink, and being mindful of your pace are all significant steps toward a healthier relationship with alcohol.
